1/31/2024 0 Comments Spec ops the line dubai![]() It could have been any other city than Dubai any city with tall skyscrapers and a desert attached besides it. It also makes me understand how someone based in another part of the world might have felt when they first saw their city depicted in a post-apocalyptic fashion in some movie or game that I had no trouble enjoying or even blowing into bits. Yes, I’m being a hypocrite and maybe it shouldn’t matter to someone who’s been playing games for over twenty years- but it does. Had it been Moscow like (insert game here) or Washington DC (insert game here), I would have not thought twice about it, but seeing a backdrop in shambles that resembles what I see on a daily basis makes me cringe. This is the dilemma I faced watching Specs Ops: The Line that, out of all places, is based in my hometown Dubai. However, when it comes to anything that combines facts and fiction- be it a book, movie or a video game, our mind starts to form an hypocritical opinion. For example, when I’m playing Diablo 3, I know that bashing all the undead zombies or skeletons is just stimulation for the “fun” part of my brain. Hopefully, most of us playing Video Games have minds that can easily distinct between truth and fiction. So I sat down with two of my fellow IGN editors to find out what they thought about the game: The online discussions vary from calculated and thoughtful opinions to all-out ragefests calling the developers disgraceful for depicting Dubai in such a ravaged state. Instead, we thought it would be good to write how as UAE residents, we feel about the game. Now while we of course respect the TRA's decision, this article isn't going to be about whether the game will release in Dubai or not. There's been plenty of media coverage in the local press about the game, especially the fact that the game's website and the public demo have been blocked by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). And it makes sense - Dubai has evolved so much over the years that it's a city that fascinates many people. Why make a game based in Dubai? "Why not?" was what one of the developers replied when I asked them this question. So when I first sat through a demo about Spec Ops: The Line during E3 last year, I was puzzled. It's where I grew up, where I was educated, and where my work and family life is. As someone who was born in Dubai and lived here all my life, I have a tremendous affinity to this city.
